College Life!

Well, it seems like summer has just flown by, but at the same time, it’s almost like it was the longest summer of my life. I was in this state of being all excited for college, but also dreading the fact that I’d once again be subjected to long, torturous hours of sitting around doing nothing and being bothered with busy work. Monday, August 23rd, marked my first step into the college word. I was not let down by the experience.

August 22nd. I was sitting in bed, wondering what the next day would hold. It would, of course, hold the first day of college. What was there to not be excited about? I went to sleep with the feeling you get when you know something big is looming on the horizon.

The next morning, I woke quite early. Probably due to the fact that my subconsciousness knew something was coming up too. I got up, got dressed, ate some toast, and then left, taking a slight detour to take my brother to the bus stop. ‘Okay,’ I thought, ‘now off to college.’

SBCC, or Santa Barbara City College, is ranked as one of the highest city colleges in the nation. It allows you to transfer to all of the UCs with guaranteed admittance, with one exception being UCLA . You just get priority there. But whatever.

My class schedule looks like this. Mondays I go in for Spanish at 8 until 10, Philosophy at 12:45 until 2, Intermediate Algebra at 3 until 5, and English 110 from 6~9. Wednesday is almost the same, the difference being the fact that I don’t have English that night. I like my schedule, it allows me time in between classes to rest up a bit, do homework, etc.

I had a hard time finding the correct room for my Spanish class. Finally, after looking around for a bit, I managed to find the room wherein I’ll be learning a different language. The teacher’s really great too. We are to address him not by a title or last name, but as Marcelo…which is his first name. Gotta love college. Also, in the last two class periods, that’s four hours, he’s managed to teach me more than two Spanish teachers back in high school did.

My Philosophy teacher is really cool too. I get to enjoy his strange voices and weird comparisons with Dan Gold at my side. It’s a great class.

Then there’s Intermediate Algebra. At first, I thought that her semi thick accent would hinder my ability to understand her. However, I was proven wrong and am now understanding way more than I did in high school. It’s great. Also, at first I thought her little attempts at jokes were just stupid, after about an hour, my thoughts had once again changed greatly. I was chuckling at every little failed joke she made.

English 110. Now that’s a class to make me want to kick something…at least when I was in high school. However, in this class we seem to have stepped (very) far away from the idea of ‘busy work’. Instead, we’re actually just writing a few essays and a research paper. No filling out stupid worksheets and hand outs. Just some reading and writing. That I can do. Also, the teacher let us out at seven forty five, as opposed to the the official release time of nine o’clock. Thank you ma’am.

All in all, I’m really looking forward to the rest of the semester. What they say is true. I’m in college now. I want to be here. I’m a bit more motivated by the fact that this is a new environment and feels like it’s taking me somewhere. This is gonna be great.

  1. David, I love the comparisons with High School and how City College is stacking up so well.
This is a happy post and I love that.
I look forward to hearing more about your learning and I think mostly the new opinions you develop because of your Philosophy course.
